Be the first to get rid of every card by melding, laying off and discarding your last card. A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. If you get rid of your entire hand in a single turn without ever having melded or laid off before, you've "gone Rummy" — and your points for that round are doubled. Points Rummy, Pool, Deals and Rummy 500 each count a little differently — our rummy scoring guide breaks down every format with worked examples.
Under the basic rules in this guide, Ace is low. This guide covers Traditional/Basic Rummy, not Gin Rummy or 500 Rummy. When one player gets rid of their entire hand, the round immediately ends. A set is three or four cards of the same rank, such as three 7s.
For 2 or 4 players, two 52-card decks gaja vip (104 cards) and 4 jokers (wild cards) are used. The first player out wins the round and scores against the deadwood left in opposing hands. In games allowing the round to end at any time, the score is awarded to the winning player with the lowest unmatched card sum based on the differences with the other players. The goal when playing Rummy games is to form a hand of melds, aiming to win by removing as many unmatched cards, sometimes known as deadwood, as possible. The winner scores the value of all cards still held by the other players. The players put their cards face-up on the table and call out how many points they have left for the winner.
The game ends after the hand in which a player reaches 200 points. The player with the highest score wins! The top card stays face up to start the new discard pile, and the other cards are not shuffled. One card is turned face up beside the draw pile to start the discard pile. You score by going out, which means getting rid of every card in your hand before the other players do. Player 1 clearly wins via score, but player 2 can lay off their J♥ and 7♥ to the first meld in Player 1’s hand.
